The Great Packing Dilemma: What To Pack For Two Month Trip To South America

The time has finally come, my much anticipated trip to South America starts within 24 hours! Therefore, naturally the last few days have been filled with the great packing dilemma; what to pack for two month trip to South America. Not only is the length an issue, but I am not sticking to one climate.  I will be travelling from the Tropical beaches in Brazil to the high Andes in Peru and even a couple days of skiing in Chile.  All the while vowing to only carry one backpack (MEC 60L multiday backpack) and one daypack.  So here’s what I ended up packing, lets hope I didn’t overpack or forget anything VITAL!

Packing-2

Clothing:

  • 3 t-shirts
  • 2 tank tops
  • 3 long sleeved shirts
  • 1 sweater
  • 3 pants
  • 2 shorts
  • 2 wool hiking socks
  • 6 pairs of ankle socks
  • Bikini
  • Long underwear (top and bottoms)
  • PJ’s (tank top and shorts)

Equipment:

  • Rain gear (MEC Synergy LT Jacket and pants)
  • MEC Dual Degree Down Jacket (packs up to the size of rolled up newspaper)
  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Head lamp
  • Laundry bag
  • Hiking boots
  • ECCO Biom Terrain Sandals
  • Flip flops
  • Sunglasses
  • Glasses
  • First aid kit & prescribed travel meds (altitude sickness pills, Malarone)
  • Sunscreen & bug lotion
  • Laundry detergent
  • Converters
  • Phone and camera cords/charger
  • Side bag
  • Travel journal
  • Lara bars (for those long days of travel)

Toiletries:

  • Travel shampoo/conditioner

  • Cream
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Face wipes
  • Contacts/solution
  • Small makeup bag
  • Hairbrush
  • Toothbrush/floss/paste
  • Nail clipper
  • Q-tips

I tried to stick to the basics as best as possible, as well as really relying on the method of layering for the colder places (it’s winter in South America when it is summer in North America).  I also am trying out some packing organizers (light weight cubes and dry sacks).  I’ve split up my tops and bottoms into separate bags that will be easy to spot and pull out of my pack, hopefully reducing backpack chaos.

Airplane Outfit: grey skinny jeans, white v-neck, scarf, lululemon sweater, yellow H&M "Keds" and a $9 Walmart watch

So with that I think I should be adequately prepared for the following itinerary, hope my packing worked!  I will be travelling with G Adventures for the majority of the first half of the trip, then will be meeting up with my boyfriend in Cuzco, Peru.

  • 8 days in Brazil, starting in Rio de Janeiro moving south along the coast to Ilha Grande, Paraty then flying to Iguassu Falls
  • 5 days in Uruguay including an Estancia stay
  • 8 days in Argentina, mostly in Buenos Aires
  • 4 days in Porto Alegre, Brazil
  • 9 days in Cuzco, Peru, including a 4 day trek in the Sacred Valley and a visit to Machu Picchu
  • 4 days in the Amazon Rainforest near Puerto Maldonado, Peru
  • 5 days in Santiago, Chile where we’ll hopefully get some skiing in
  • ~5 days in Pucon, Chile where we’ll try to summit Villarrica Volcano!

I think I’m as prepared as I’ll ever be! Everything fits into the pack with room to spare for souvenirs (especially the much coveted alpaca sweater!) and isn’t too heavy.  I will try to keep up with blog posts throughout my trip, so stay tuned for the many many adventures to come! Bon Voyage!
