I’ve said this many times before, and I’ll say it again. Much of who I am today is attributed to the outdoor experiences I had growing up and the skills I learnt from them. Taking on any form of outdoor adventure helps build self confidence and leadership skills. I recently came across a fantastic not-for-profit organization called Urban Blazors that does just that! I can’t help but feel excited and inspired when I hear of other young people engaging in the outdoors and realizing their potential from it.
“Urban Blazers was founded in 2005 and has grown to annually serve 1,100 young people from Philadelphia’s most under-resourced communities. Our programs consist of experiential education and are typically delivered through outdoor activities that serve as hands on learning environments. Activities, such as rock climbing, hiking, camping, whitewater rafting, canoeing and skiing, are used as subtle techniques to engage youth. The goals of our programs include relationship development and mentoring, leadership and healthy team dynamics, and science and conservation education. Our programming is delivered by collaborating with schools, mentoring programs, community centers and other local youth organizations.”
If you live in the Philadelphia area and are interested in volunteering in some capacity, check out their website. For those that live a little further away, like myself, that would still like to contribute in this great cause can do so by making a donation via their website.
Thank you to everyone involved in Urban Blazors for sharing your passion for the outdoors!
